Background of the Study
Cardiac nurses play a critical role in the management of patients with heart disease, providing care that ranges from routine monitoring to intensive intervention during cardiac events. However, the workload of nurses can influence the quality of care they provide and, by extension, patient outcomes. In Borno State, a northeastern region in Nigeria, healthcare infrastructure has been severely impacted by ongoing conflicts, leading to staff shortages, overcrowding, and increased workloads for the remaining healthcare workers, including nurses (Abubakar et al., 2023). Nurses in the region face challenges such as inadequate staffing, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and insufficient resources, all of which contribute to a heavy workload. These challenges may affect their ability to deliver optimal care, particularly for patients with complex cardiac conditions.

Research has shown that a high workload among healthcare providers can lead to burnout, reduced quality of care, and poor patient outcomes (Odeyemi et al., 2024). The impact of nurse workload on cardiac patient outcomes has not been extensively studied in the context of Borno State. As cardiac disease is a leading cause of death in Nigeria, understanding the relationship between nurses’ workload and patient outcomes is critical to improving healthcare delivery in the region. This study will investigate the effect of cardiac nurses' workload on patient outcomes in Borno State, aiming to identify strategies to improve care under challenging circumstances.

Statement of the Problem
Borno State has faced significant challenges in healthcare provision, particularly in the context of cardiac care, due to high workloads, resource limitations, and the ongoing security issues in the region. Despite the essential role of cardiac nurses in improving patient outcomes, their heavy workload may negatively impact the quality of care they provide. This study seeks to examine the relationship between the workload of cardiac nurses and the outcomes of patients with heart disease in Borno State, considering the unique challenges faced in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the workload of cardiac nurses in Borno State.

2. To evaluate the impact of cardiac nurses’ workload on the outcomes of patients with cardiovascular diseases in Borno State.

3. To identify strategies for improving patient outcomes despite the high workload faced by cardiac nurses in Borno State.

Research Questions

1. What is the workload of cardiac nurses in Borno State?

2. How does the workload of cardiac nurses in Borno State impact patient outcomes?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve patient outcomes despite the high workload of cardiac nurses in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

1. The workload of cardiac nurses in Borno State negatively impacts patient outcomes.

2. High workload among cardiac nurses in Borno State is associated with poorer patient outcomes.

3. Implementing strategies to reduce the workload of cardiac nurses will improve patient outcomes in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on cardiac nurses working in hospitals and healthcare centers in Borno State. It will assess their workload and how it affects patient outcomes. Limitations include the availability of nurses for participation, potential biases in self-reported workload data, and logistical challenges due to the region's security situation.

Definitions of Terms

• Cardiac Nurses: Nurses who specialize in the care and management of patients with heart disease or other cardiovascular conditions.

• Workload: The amount of work or number of patients a nurse is responsible for in a given period.

• Patient Outcomes: The results of healthcare interventions on patients, including recovery, complications, and survival rates.

• Borno State: A northeastern state in Nigeria, which has faced healthcare challenges due to ongoing conflict and instability.
